If you are still undecided about whether you want to make the trip to Baltimore, and think there is nothing for +Baltimore Science Fiction Society there. You would be wrong. We could write a long blog about it but we thought we would do one better. Baltimore Public Library has a podcast and they interviewed two of the principals involved with the Creatures, Crimes and Creativity conference.

This conference is for all authors, fans, writers and publishers. Where else could +IndieAuthors.com be an active participant and have their books to sell?

We hope to see you there.

Now, did you know that authors need to update their profiles every year. Just like our students who get their pictures taken every year; so do authors.

This year we will once again have E.Harcus Photography doing head shots for authors who would like one. This is not a FREE event but for a minimum cost, paid directly to the photographer; you can have your head shots done.

Now isn't that a really good reason to come to Hunt Valley Conference Center this year and take part in the Creatures Crimes and Creativity Con?

Our authors have been traveling and promoting their novels like hard working bees and their efforts and paying off.

Two of our authors, joined +Christine Verstraete by winning the +LOVEY award this year in Chicago at the Love Is Murder conference.

+Annie Alexander and +Jeff Markowitz won Lovey's for their novels and we were super excited!

They are pictured here with the other award winners and as you can see they are very excited.

So although we haven't been writing our blogs, we have been doing a lot of personal appearances and traveling to conferences.

The next thing coming up is the conference in Salisbury Maryland and New York City.
This year was such a blast that we can't wait to do it again, next year!

The committee ended up a great weekend by celebrating with a few days of rest before getting ready for next year.

We want to thank +Dee Lawrence +Larry Matthews +Ann Arbaugh +Juli Monroe +B Swangin Webster +Austin Camacho +Denise Camacho +Cynthia Lauth for all of the hard work they put into the conference.

Without all of you the conference would not have run smooth. The picture says it all and we enjoyed every minute of sharing stories with the authors, sharing tips with the presenters and sharing laughs over meals.

If you want to be at the convention next year, all you have to do is go to this link http://creaturescrimesandcreativity.com

We already have some great special guests lined up.

Four days until the 2nd annual +MdC3Con is here. On October 10; authors, fans and writers will descend upon +HuntValley Maryland to attend the Creatures, Crimes and Creativity conference.

We have worked hard to put together this conference for you. The board members have met every month and tweak, stretched and scratched our heads on how to make it a great conference for you.

You will be surprised on the number of suggestions that we took from the survey's last year to make you the conference that you wanted.

From more fan panels to more time to network; we listened and we hope that you will enjoy this conference.

We have more volunteers who will be wearing some really cool hats for you to find them more easily. We also have a scavenger hunt planned with the grand prize being a KINDLE FIRE..now how cool is THAT!

So, get your pens, paper and brains ready. We are going to have a blast and we can't wait to see you all.

If you are going to be there, spread the word about our book signing. We have not one but 3 New York Times bestselling authors signing their books on Friday AND Saturday. So grab your wallet and camera and come on down; they are waiting for you and have their smiles ready!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15323958812542080779noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6415193162205047431.post-77897058729875419772014-09-26T08:00:00.000-04:002014-09-26T08:00:03.398-04:00WHAT'S IN THE NAME?We are gearing up for this to be the best convention/conference yet!

You may have noticed that we changed the term conference to convention and you may be wondering why.

Well in our experience, the word conference seems to indicate that you are merely there to meet for a consultation or discussion. The word convention means covering matters in a less formal setting.

Doesn't that convey what we are doing at the Creatures, Crimes and Creativity Convention. We are meeting in a less formal setting to convey or cover the world of writing for fans, readers and authors.

In discussing the name for the convention we wanted something that was all inclusive to the writing community. We however wanted to take into account those people who are "in the process" of writing and we thought, well all authors or wanna be authors are "creative". Then we wanted to make sure to include those mystery writers and thought of "crimes", after all what is a good mystery without a little bit of crime. However crimes also cover thrillers and suspense. Then we needed something that included our paranormal, Sci-Fi and Horror writers. So of course came 'creatures". So as you can see the title that we thought of had to include a lot of different genres and we feel that with the inclusion of all of the above mentioned genres, that the 'convention' would be a great way to bring it all together.

This is the second year and it has double in size from it's first year. We are so very happy and we hope that you will leave the C3 con with a newfound love of writing and also with a kick in the seat of your pants to put your butts in the chair and finish that novel.

So, have you signed up? If you have, leave us a comment about what you hope to accomplish at the convention.

If you haven't signed up, it is not to late; you can do so right here--->Creatures, Crimes and Creativity Con

We hope to see you there on October. 10-12, 2014 in Hunt Valley, Maryland.
In the coming weeks you will see a list of 20 reasons on why you should attend the Creatures, Crimes and Creativity Convention.

Well for the fans of mystery, Sci-Fi, paranormal, horror, thrillers, fantasy and suspense; you want to attend because you will get to hang out with some very cool people.

Sadly there will be no costumes but there will be plenty of laughs to go around and the atmosphere will be friendly, inviting and most of all informative.

If you want to be an author, you need to be at this convention. It is geared so that you will share all of your meals with NY Times best selling authors. You will share your breaks listening to the process that some writers go through when they have deadlines. You will get the skinny on what is going on in social media today and you will also get first hand knowledge on how a publishing company works.

So if you check out @intrigupub on +Twitter you will find all 20 reasons on why you should attend the convention. Not to mention you will also see +BradParks +CJEllison +RebeccaYork and +JohnGilstrap

But the main reason you should attend is reason number 21!

You get to see the +Fabulous shoes +BSwanginWebster will be wearing! That alone is worth it!

We hope to see you there.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15323958812542080779noreply@blogger.com0Cheltenham, MD 20623, USA38.7356711 -76.826359413.645170599999997 -118.1349534 63.826171599999995 -35.5177654tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6415193162205047431.post-35979865160702239162014-03-20T06:00:00.000-04:002014-03-20T06:00:13.611-04:00THIS IS WHAT I DO

After
years of following and becoming online friends (way before Facebook) with Austin
Camacho, I finally met him and his lovely wife Denise. The C3 conference was their idea and it was
designed for readers and writers to meet and exchange ideas, and to enjoy each
other’s company in an informal atmosphere. Austin was a member of our blog group
for a while, but he didn't have the time to keep up with it. He has remained a
friend of mine and of Writing Wranglers and Warriors and often shares the blog.
Maybe he will join us again some day.

I met Jeffery Deaver (another writer who greatly influenced me)
and he was interested in my stories about life on the truck (Life in the
Fast Lane). He is an international best seller. He wrote “The Bone
Collector” among many others. He’s been writing for 30 years.

He
gave five points for new writers to follow:

Know your audience and give them what they want.

Write in the genre that you read because you've already learned a lot about
it.

Take the authors you admire and who have written successful books in your
opinion and you tear those books apart. Outline them. Learn what they did and
when they did it.

You need to outline your books. You need to structure you books. It doesn't
have to be as extensive as I do, but you need to structure the books so you know
where it’s going to go.

Finally, remember that a rejection is a speed bump. It’s not a brick wall.
And just keep at it.

I've
already shared ideas from the two panels I was on.

John
Gilstrap was also there and he is also a best seller. I was surrounded by famous
people who acted just like the rest of us.
We had a good time and really got to know each of them, as well as many fans and
other authors. There were people there from the very first stages of writing to
the very prolific and profitable stages. The one thing you heard in each class
was laughter and you know what my favorite thing to do is. LOL.

An
Interview with John Gilstrap, Author of Scott Free Ever
since I was a little kid, I've been fascinated by survival stories. There’s
something very compelling about the notion of one person stranded in the
wilderness, pitted against impossible odds, somehow triumphing over it all.

John
was fascinating and I'll be reading his books soon, after I finish the more
famous, in my eyes, books by our own Writing Wranglers and Warriors.

At one of the conference sessions, I was in the same group with Brian Keene,
sitting by John Gilstrap, listening to Jeffery Deaver, who was on a panel being
monitored by Austin Camacho.

It
was almost as much fun as sitting (Quietly-Grinning here), listening to Del
telling secrets about me.

So
if you get a chance to go to a conference-GO! I have been to several and I've
never been disappointed.

We did. Last year. It was the first year of the +C3Conference and we had no idea how to go about letting people know about this conference. You can look at the fun we had by click the link: Creatures, Crimes and Creativity

We immediately took to +Social Media Explorer and started putting it out there for people to find us.

We were shocked by the turnout! We had over 100 registered attendees to a conference that was the brain child of +Austin Camacho .

We gathered authors and fans of Sci-Fi, Horror, Paranormal, Mystery, Thrillers, Suspense and Fantasy in +HuntValleyInn to celebrate these genres.

We had great food, had lots of laughs and even took over the bar. We were so surprised at the reviews afterwards.

John Gilstrap has spoken about how great of a time he had last year and he plans to join us this year. We have some great folks lined up.

+Eric Von Lustbader, +Rebecca York, +CJ Ellison and +Brad Parks will be our headliners this year and we have already signed up over 2 dozen writers.

We have an anthology that will be given away and will never be sold. This is a way to get fans to enjoy new authors and their stories.

Our on site bookstore was always busy and some of the authors actually sold out of their novels.

We had a first time authors panel and a spouses panel where we got to hear all about some of the authors secrets while they were working on their latest novel.
Perhaps
it’s because I love to cook—buttery popovers, succulent roast chicken, sweet
and moistly rich red-velvet cupcakes with cream cheese icing (really, whatever
suits my mood)—that I often think of novel writing in the same way. I start
with a hunger for a particular mix of story elements, grab my ingredients, and
get to work. The desire to experiment and create is something we all share—whether
that means baking, writing, or tinkering with car engines. If, like me, your reading
tastes are eclectic—and you also enjoy writing fiction—you, too, might consider
mixing genres not only in your to-be-read pile but also in your to-be-written
file.

Here’s where it starts for many of
us. . . One lazy Saturday you’re in the mood for an edge-of-the-chair thriller.
Another evening you long to mellow out with a moving love story. Still another
day your brain cells call out for challenging mystery or a mind-blowing
adventure set in an exotic locale. There certainly are a great many exciting
thrillers, romances, and adventure stories being written by talented authors
today. But I guess I’m a little greedy. I want it all. All in one book, that
is.

And that—pure selfishness—is the raison d’être for the series I’ve been
working on for the past few years. If I were to apply a label to these
novels—three published, so far—I’d call them romantic Victorian thrillers. The
ingredients are drawn from my favorite genres: mystery, romance, and historical
fiction. And the recipe is this: Each novel, so far, is based on real events
surrounding Queen Victoria’s family and features one of the little queen’s
three daughters as the protagonist. Based in fact and the Victorian era, I’m
able to satisfy my love of history. But then the creative writer takes
over—after all, I’m not penning a biography or history text—and I develop an
interesting mystery with quickly paced thriller element to challenge my royal
protagonist. Only then, when the first two elements are locked down, do I allow
myself to give my hero and heroine a romance. Because, after all, what is life
without a little love?

I’ve had such fun with these
stories. If you get a chance to read any of my Mary Hart Perry novels, I hope
you’ll let me know what you think of the mix. What genres or elements of
fiction would you include in your own creative story blend?

Meanwhile, here’s just a tiny bit
about each of the Mary Hart Perry novels. . .The Wild Princess:
Princess Louise, considered the wild-child of the royal family because she
wishes to become—Gasp!—an artist, struggles
to protect the queen from an assassination attempt by Irish separatists who are
bombing London. When a mysterious American borrowed by the Queen’s Secret
Service steps in to chase down the culprits, he sets his heart on capturing
more than the dynamiteers.
Seducing the Princess:
Beatrice, youngest child of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, is expected to shun
all men and devote herself entirely to her widowed mother, “unto the grave”.
But when the Bea finally falls in love, the Queen is horrified to find her
daughter has not one but two suitors. Will they sort out which one truly loves
her, and which one is a spy secretly planted at the palace by the ruthless heir
to Germany’s throne?

The Shadow Princess:
The year 1888 brings tragedy to Crown Princess Vicky, Queen Victoria’s eldest
child. Empress of Germany for just 3 months before her husband died, Vicky is now
without a “job”, since her adopted country’s throne has gone to Willy, her mad
son. When news of Jack-the-Ripper’s shocking murders in London reaches her—and
she learns that nephew Eddie is at the top of the list of suspects, she must
rush home to clear the family name. It’s there that Vicky tangles with an
intriguing Whitechapel detective, who is as intent on catching the Ripper as he
is on avoiding romantic entanglements with a lovely royal.

Since we all live a distance away from each other we decided to do SKYPE and boy did we have a ball. First on the 'test' call, everyone could see +B Swangin Webster but she could see nothing but the avatar or a blank screen. Not to worry, she would fix that in the twenty minutes before the call. +Ann Arbaugh couldn't connect to SKYPE so we called her on +Denise Camacho cellphone and had her on speaker. Everything is set, right?

Wrong, Wrong and Wrong.

The call started with everyone announcing themselves and the rule of only one person talking at a time was established. Great...we started off with Larry giving his update and then Juli and then +Austin Camacho and then it happened. It went something like this.

"Hello, Larry, I didn't hear what you said...are you there...Larry...Larry...LARRY...I THINK WE LOST LARRY! LARRY!" (ok, maybe it wasn't that dramatic)

+Dee Lawrence was still on the line and said, "I can still see him connected" and so did I. Even +Juli Monroe could see he was still on the line and after a harrowing five minutes Larry called back!

Excited I tried connecting him but then something happened...Dee and Juli were now on hold! What! Hello! Hello! Hold on Larry, I think I need to reconnect...I 'resume the call' with Dee and Juli but now, Larry is on hold! oh wait! now what the Sam Hell is going on! Hold on Larry"....hey what's that noise....Ann said she needed to go into another room and now, suddenly there is the sound of rushing water! Oh no! Is Ann drowning...'Ann! Ann! are you there! Ann, are you OK?

Good lord, I think she's drowning!" Austin said (I think he was panicked but he won't admit it)

Flustered I said, "Lawd, Ann's drowning, Larry's lost....look, I think I need to redo this...everyone hang up and I'll call back."

Ann said, "ok" We (Austin, Denise and Sandra) yelled "Noooooooooo, not you Ann; just Skype"

I called everyone back, except Ann who by now should have had on a life vest; and the call continued without problem. After the call, Ann posted to Facebook and gasp! clutch the pearls, we forgot to add +CindyLauth to the call! Forgive us for we know not what we do.

See, although we were working hard, we still had fun! Miles away and we still find a way to cut up! Don't worry Larry, you will get used to it; Just ask Austin.

Until next month...I wonder what will happen then?Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15323958812542080779noreply@blogger.com5Waldorf, MD, USA38.6265124 -76.91054830000001638.527284900000005 -77.071909800000014 38.7257399 -76.749186800000018tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6415193162205047431.post-3873795637670023402013-12-11T08:00:00.000-05:002013-12-11T08:00:03.825-05:00IF LOVING VILLAINS IS WRONG...I DON'T WANT TO WRITE!

What I like best about writers' conferences and this one in particular are the
interesting people one meets. Not only the headliners like Jeffrey Deaver and
Allison Leotta (See my blog page on the conference at: http://williamfietzer.com/2013/10/27/a-lesson-repeated-at-the-creatures-crimes-and-creativity-conference/ but the attendees I rubbed elbows or broke bread with at the breakfasts,
luncheons, and after-hours soirees all had interesting stories to tell.

Allied with this is the serendipity factor. Though Baltimore is
something of an outer-ring satellite of Washington, D.C., I never expected to
meet the mother of a son who works for the U.S. Foreign Service. Turns out that
Lane Stone and I both have sons in the diplomatic corps working in the Far East,
hers in Beijing and mine in Osaka. Such a small, intimate, intriguing world
globalization has created for us!

The other thing I enjoyed about the
conference was the opportunity to explore the Baltimore area via the light rail
line. At other conventions such as in Atlanta and San Antonio, taking the light
rail or bus lines permits me the opportunity to get a feel of the city, if only
through a window as a passing traveler. Never having been to Baltimore before,
the hour and a half trip provided ample opportunity to witness the magnitude of
Baltimore Harbor, the location of the Baltimore Orioles stadium, the rebuilding
historic downtown, and the extensive sub-urbanization of many industries and
manufacturing plants that reach almost to the Pennsylvania state
line.

The trip also revealed that a two-story high berm or bridge need
not be the environmental eyesore that opponents of one of the proposed local
spurs to the light rail line in Minneapolis claim it could be. All politics,
they say (whoever "they" are), are local, and the anecdotal evidence gleaned
from my ride to and from the airport showed that an elevated rail track is not
the odious monster some locals claim is sufficient reason for stalling a
multi-million dollar transportation project.

The link to my Facebook

notes I had prepared for my panels on you now.

According to my informal survey people preferred the first
Sex in the City movie to the
second. In the follow on, there was too
much ‘set up for a joke, joke.’ Humor in
your novel should be organic to the plot and the characters. Next, consider
your genre. In mysteries, you can use
humor to give your readers a break from the tension you've created. Whereas, in romance, including romantic
suspense, editors tend prefer your heroine have very few funny lines. Her best
friend can cracks jokes all the time. Last, and you’ll have to trust me on this, after
you read your funny lines a couple of hundred times you’ll question them. Rely on your critique partner.

In this
post-Breaking Bad world, we need to think of our protagonist’s moral code, rather than his or her
morals. In my Tiara Investigations
series, the three sleuths start a detective agency and don’t tell their
husbands, which forces them to meet clients at a local Cracker Barrel. Sure, this deceit might look immoral to some,
but it is consistent with their code of sisterhood. Consistency is key – until it’s not. Again, consider your genre. In romantic suspense, characters are expected
to change. They work their way through some internal conflict and are different
by the end of the book, so they can – you guessed it – love again. In cozy mysteries, the sleuth changes very
little. Think Hercule Poirot and Miss
Marple. Your sleuth’s life might change
(or not) but not her moral code. And
remember, show don’t tell your hero or heroines moral code.

They added a new member and they have their duties. Larry Matthews has been a friend for a while and after attending the C3 conference, he asked if he could be a part of this small group of zany, crazy people. I personally think it was because +Austin Camacho was the lone man on the group and after the passionate speech that Austin gave at the opening ceremony, Larry felt sorry for him. We like to think it was because the women on the board are so irresistible or maybe he just wanted to be the first to see what shoes one board member would have for next year.

C3 Conference Board Members (left-right)
Sandra, Juli, Denise, Cyndi, Deliah
Austin, Ann

Either way, we are glad to have him on the team and the work has begun. Marketing never stops and Sandra has been working hard; well we don't think she ever stopped and except for interchanging a just signed author with an author that she has been trying to forget. Austin has been contacting potential guests and finding out that not everyone reads email every day. Denise has been trying to keep the website updated but with the many changes that occur; it's almost a full time job in itself. Cyndi is out of state so she doesn't have to worry about the long meetings but she has the task of keeping all emails/registrations and payments (which have already started rolling in)Ann, Juli and Deliah have all waited so patiently for their new duties that they may run and hide when they find out what it is that they will be doing. (Deliah...don't worry, your job duties are exactly the same) That leaves Larry; poor, unsuspecting, Larry. Well he will find out soon enough why we meet at an eatery that serves plenty of coffee!

The laughs that will be shared, the coffee that will be drank and the ideas, suggestions that will be shared will be the best memories that we all will make
.

Welcome aboard and welcome back. The work has just begun!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15323958812542080779noreply@blogger.com0Upper Marlboro, MD 20772, USA38.8159473 -76.74969090000001938.8035753 -76.769860900000012 38.8283193 -76.729520900000026tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6415193162205047431.post-62109992852967840952013-09-23T08:00:00.000-04:002013-09-23T08:00:13.527-04:00AND NOW THE WORK BEGINSThe C3 Conference ended last Sunday, a little before noon. The panelists were heading home, the hotel was quiet and the board members were exhausted.

The drive home was spent in reflection.

Had everyone enjoyed themselves? Was it what I wanted it to be? Did I do a good job moderating my panels? Did everyone think I was funny, stupid or just an annoyance? Did my shoes photograph well?

I know people enjoyed themselves and I know that although there weren't that many fans there, I think the authors had a great time.

Look, we (the board members) tried our hardest to get the fans involved but we didn't have costumes, movie stars or TV stars and we didn't have a game room that stayed open all night. We didn't have the 8-3-1 rule (for those that don't know it is...sleep for at least 8 hours, eat at least 3 times and take at least 1 shower) Apparently at some 'fan' based conferences they have to state that rule up front. Well we didn't have that rule although a lot of us ended up in the bar, we still managed to get enough rest that we didn't look like we were zombies. (hint: +visine is your friend at a conference)

What we did have was panels that were informative, authors that were accessible and volunteers that were helpful. We thought we wouldn't get a lot of feedback but you know what; we did and all of the feedback has been positive.

Were there problems, sure, just like any conference but those problems were so small we could swat them away. (for those of you at the conference, you know what I am talking about) Hey, that was a good problem to have. Not every first time conference can say that they had almost 80 people there, the food was great and the entertainment was fantastic!

We Can!

All that to say, hopefully next year fans will want to come even if we don't have those silly rules and no game room. If not, the writers and their friends, who have now become fans, will have a blast. Just like they did this year.

If you were there and took pictures of our marketing director and her shoes, please send them to our shoe diva so she can post them here and on her blog; aptly called "Shoes On Tour 2013"

Next year's conference is scheduled for October 10-12 and will have more great authors, more great panelists and the cutest shoes our marketing director can find. You don't want to miss it!
